Grief

A Prayer for the Loss of a Friend

2 min readPray slowly
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”John 15:13

Father, I have lost a friend, and the world feels suddenly smaller and stranger. They were the one who knew my old stories, who laughed at the jokes no one else would understand, who simply got me. Now that whole language has gone quiet.

Theirs is a grief that others sometimes overlook, as though only family is allowed to mourn this deeply. But this loss is real. A piece of my own history walked out of the world with them.

I bring this quiet, overlooked sorrow to You, who counts every friendship precious. You saw all the years we shared, every conversation and kindness, every ordinary moment that turned out to be a gift.

Comfort me in the missing. Let the love we built keep living in me. Help me honor them by carrying forward the goodness they poured into my life.

You called Your own followers friends, and You laid down everything for the people You loved. You understand exactly what this kind of love is worth, and what its loss costs.

I thank You for the gift of them, and I place them in Your care. Keep my friend, and comfort the friend left behind. Amen.

Amen.

The love of a true friend is precious to God; its loss is real grief.
