A Prayer for the Loss of a Spouse
Father, the other half of my life is gone, and the house is so quiet I can hear my own heartbeat. The bed is too wide, the table too large, and a hundred small moments a day turn to ask them something before I remember.
We built a whole world together, and now I am living in the ruins of it alone. I do not know who I am without the one who knew me best. The future we planned has vanished, and I am standing in its place with empty hands.
I bring this loneliness to You, this grief that has no bottom. You were the witness to every vow we made. You saw the love that no one else fully saw.
Be my companion in the long evenings. Be the presence on the other side of the silence. Hold me on the nights when the missing rises up and I cannot breathe for the weight of it.
You promised never to leave me nor forsake me, that even when I walk through the darkest valley You are walking beside me. Walk with me now, every slow and lonely step.
I give You my marriage, my memories, and my broken heart. Be near, until love and life are made whole again. Amen.
Amen.
The vows were witnessed by God; the widowed heart is not walking alone.
