A Prayer for Light When Everything Feels Dark

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”John 1:5

Father, everything has gone dim. It is not just my mood, it is the whole landscape, as if someone turned the brightness all the way down on my life and I am stumbling around bumping into things I used to see clearly. I am searching for a single point of light and finding none.

I confess I have looked everywhere except toward You, scrolling and numbing and waiting for the dark to lift on its own. It has not lifted, and I am worn out from groping in the gray.

So I turn now to You, the One who said let there be light and there was. You speak into formless dark and make it morning.

Send me a sliver. Not the full sunrise yet, just enough light to take the next step, to see the next handhold, to make out the shape of one small good thing. Let me notice mercy where it is hiding.

Your word promises that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. The dark is loud, but it does not get the last word, and it never has.

I hand You my unlit days and my failing eyes. Be the lamp at my feet when I cannot see the road. Lead me, one lit step at a time, back toward the morning. Amen.

Amen.

You do not need the whole sunrise. Just enough light for one step.
