A Prayer for Forgiveness in Marriage

2 min readPray slowly
“Bear with each other and forgive one another, just as the Lord forgave you.”Colossians 3:13

Father, the hurt is sitting in my chest like a stone tonight. I have been wronged, and part of me wants to nurse it, to keep it close, to let it justify the cold shoulder I have been giving. The bitterness is heavier than I expected.

I confess I have used forgiveness as a bargaining chip, withholding it until I felt the apology was good enough. But carrying this resentment has not punished my spouse. It has only poisoned me from the inside.

So I come to You, who forgave me a debt I could never repay, who did not wait until I deserved it. I cannot manufacture this grace on my own. I need You to soften what has gone hard in me.

Help me forgive not because the wound was small but because Your mercy is large. And where I am the one who caused the hurt, give me the humility to own it without excuse.

You said to forgive as the Lord forgave us, to bear with each other and let kindness do its work. Let me extend what I have so freely been given.

I lay the stone down at Your feet. I will not pick it back up tomorrow. Free us both from the prison of keeping score, and lead us back into the lightness of grace. Amen.

Amen.

The grudge you carry weighs you down more than the one who wronged you.
