A Prayer for Protection During a Storm
Father, the wind is throwing itself against the windows and the lights have flickered twice, and every gust makes my chest tighten. The sky has gone that strange green color, and I am sitting here listening to the house groan, asking You to hold us through this.
I confess that the noise undoes me. I keep refreshing the radar, counting the seconds between the thunder, trying to manage a thing no one can manage. My fear has filled the room more than the storm has.
So I bring my pounding heart to You, the One the wind and waves still obey. Hold the roof above us. Steer the worst of it away from this place and from everyone out in it tonight.
You stood in a boat once while the disciples panicked, and You spoke to the storm and it went still, and the same voice can speak peace over this house and over me.
Quiet the fear even before the weather quiets. Let me hear, under the howling, the steady voice that says peace, be still, and rest in it until morning. Amen.
Amen.
The voice that calmed the sea can calm the fear inside you before the wind dies down.
