A Prayer for Breaking a Bad Habit
Lord, there is a small thing that runs my life from the shadows, a reach of the hand I do automatically, a loop I fall into without deciding to. It is not the kind of thing people notice, but I notice. It steals my hours and my peace a little at a time.
I confess I have let it become a reflex, something I do to soothe a moment and then resent for the rest of the day. I am tired of being managed by it.
So I bring this quiet, stubborn habit to You, the one I downplay but cannot seem to shake.
Make me aware in the half second before I reach for it, the moment where change actually lives. Give me something better to do with my hands and my restlessness. Build a new pattern in me slowly, one resisted impulse at a time, until the old groove fades and a healthier one takes its place.
You are at work in me, willing and working for Your good purpose, even in the smallest corners of my behavior.
I hand You this little chain that has held me longer than it should. Loosen it link by link. Make me free in the small things, so I can be faithful in the large ones. Amen.
Amen.
Small chains still bind. God cares about the quiet habits too, and He works in the half second before you reach.
