A Prayer for Sobriety One Day at a Time

“Give us this day our daily bread”Matthew 6:11

Lord, I cannot promise You forever this morning. Forever feels like a mountain I have no legs for, and when I look that far ahead my chest tightens and the old voice whispers that I will never make it.

So I am not going to look that far. I confess I have failed when I tried to carry the whole future at once. Today I only ask to be carried through today.

I turn to You with this single sunrise in my hands. Just these hours. Just this one stretch of morning, afternoon, and night.

Keep me through the moments when the wanting rises, when I am bored or lonely or too tired to fight. Put something good in my reach instead, a phone call, a walk, a glass of cold water, a reason to keep my hands busy. Let me lay my head down tonight able to say I made it through this one day clean.

You give bread for each day, not a year of it stockpiled, and that has always been enough. Be my daily bread now.

I give You this twenty four hours and nothing more, because that is all I have to give. Hold me to sundown. And tomorrow, when it comes, we will do this again. Amen.

Amen.

You do not have to win the war today. You only have to win this one day.
