A Prayer for a Baby to Sleep
Father, it is the middle of the night again and this little one will not settle. The crying rises and falls, and I am swaying in the dark, exhausted and out of ideas.
I confess I feel helpless and a little frightened. I love this child more than my own breath, yet I cannot give them the one thing they need right now, which is peace enough to sleep.
So I bring both of us to You, the God who gathers lambs close and carries them. You know this small heart that I am only beginning to know.
Quiet my baby, Lord. Ease whatever aches or overwhelms them. Let their breathing slow and their eyes grow heavy. And steady me too, so my arms stay gentle and my voice stays calm even when I am running on nothing.
Your word says You tend Your flock like a shepherd, gathering the young ones close to Your heart. Hold this child closer than I ever could.
I stop straining to fix this by force and trust You with the night. Cover this nursery with quiet. Bring sleep to my little one, and to me. Amen.
Amen.
The Shepherd holds your child even closer than your own tired arms can.
